| Psalm 23 Part 2 |
| [21:29] <04@footwasher> Tonight we are going to continue the study we began last week on the 23rd psalm :) [21:29] <04@footwasher> It is a short passage, but our study will be very detailed. I invite you to open your Bibles and join in and let the Lord reveal to You His love and His complete care through this passage. [21:29] <04@footwasher> Since the channel is moderated, we cannot have as much discussion as I would like. So, we will unmoderate afterward and have some time of discussion, I ask that you all be courteous to one another and discuss only the topic of this study during this time [21:29] <04@footwasher> Lets pray [21:29] <04@footwasher> Duff, will you lead us? [21:29] <6@Duff>1 sure.. [21:30] <6@Duff>1 Father, we come here tonight to worship you. [21:30] <6@Duff>1 Lord we pray that through fellowship and the study of your [21:30] <6@Duff>1 word you will speak to us. [21:30] <6@Duff>1 Illuminate your word and apply it to each of our lives. Lift us up tonight so we [21:30] <6@Duff>1 might serve your great purpose. [21:31] <6@Duff>1 Let us see you work your glory in our lives everyday [21:31] <6@Duff>1 Give us the strength, wisdom , and words to help those in need. [21:32] <6@Duff>1 In Jesus name, [21:32] <6@Duff>1 Amen [21:32] <04@footwasher> amen [21:32] <04@footwasher> 1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. [21:32] <04@footwasher> 2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. [21:32] <04@footwasher> 3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. [21:32] <04@footwasher> 4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. [21:32] <04@footwasher> 5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. [21:32] <04@footwasher> 6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. [21:33] <04@footwasher> Last week we looked at verses one and two [21:33] <04@footwasher> We discussed a bit about the background of this passage. Lets briefly look at that again. [21:34] <04@footwasher> A shepherd cares for the flock, guides them and protects them. [21:34] <04@footwasher> The author of this passage, david is making an analogy of that between us and God. He is our shepherd. [21:34] <04@footwasher> In verses 1 and two, we saw how he provides for our needs for nourishment, rest, refreshment and renewal. [21:35] <04@footwasher> Tonight we will look at verses 3 and 4. [21:35] 6* @Duff 10<3KJV10>:6 Psalms 23:3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. [21:35] <04@footwasher> We think of the Christian life as a journey, a pilgrimage [21:36] <04@footwasher> The journey is much more difficult than first expected. [21:36] <04@footwasher> By depending on our limited wisdom, we lose our way and the foreboding future shatters our confidence. [21:36] <04@footwasher> "He leadeth me" means to guide and direct carefully according to a definite plan. [21:36] <04@footwasher> David teaches us that life is not spent entirely in rest, soft living, and sheltered moments [21:36] <04@footwasher> Just as the shepherd led David, He shows us the paths to follow and guides us each step of the way [21:36] <04@footwasher> He guides in the path of righteousness. [21:36] <04@footwasher> The Christian walk involves forsaking sin and keeping our eyes fixed upon Him. [21:37] <04@footwasher> We walk in faith and in love and therefore our walk should be consistent. [21:37] <04@footwasher> When we depend on His wisdom and not our own, He makes our path plain. [21:37] <04@footwasher> He guides through difficult places. [21:37] <04@footwasher> On both sides of the path are perilous places for sheep and they never seem to learn to avoid them. [21:37] <04@footwasher> Fear, panic, and even death may be present on the journey. [21:37] <04@footwasher> David remembered such journeys and was keenly aware of sheep straying. [21:37] <04@footwasher> We, too must trust the Lord's guidance and and allow Him to guide us in the paths of righteousness "for His name's sake". [21:38] -ChatBot:#TownHall- [Sword] Psalms 23:4 -- Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. [21:38] <04@footwasher> "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death" [21:38] <04@footwasher> Sometimes we must walk through the valley. The words do not necessarily refer to death, though death may come in the valley. [21:38] 6* @Duff 14*6kjv14*:10 Psalms 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. [21:38] <04@footwasher> Picture a shepherd leading his sheep through narrow, dark gorges where there are unknown obstacles and terrors. [21:39] <04@footwasher> It is a valley of deep gloom through which they must pass [21:39] <04@footwasher> David is describing the time of testing in his life–a time when the testing was so severe that it threatened his life. [21:39] <04@footwasher> How can we endure life's threatening trials? The Good Shepherd walks through the valley with us and provides for our needs. [21:39] <04@footwasher> "I will fear no evil" We need not worry or have any doubt [21:39] <04@footwasher> "For thou art with me. He has never left us. [21:39] <04@footwasher> A shepherd protects his sheep, and certainly our Shepherd protects us. His "rod and staff" give comfort. [21:40] <04@footwasher> Lets look at what a rod and staff were to a shepherd during David's time. [21:40] <04@footwasher> The rod was used for defense against wild beast and sometimes even robbers. [21:40] <04@footwasher> The staff was for drawing the sheep out of crevices and other places of danger [21:40] <04@footwasher> Imagine for a second yourself in the place of the sheep. What does the shepherd's rod and staff mean to you? [21:40] <04@footwasher> For the sheep, these two instruments meant defense, guidance, and safety. [21:41] <04@footwasher> Think for a minute about how He has protected you from dangers and has safely drawn you out of the crevices along the paths of life. [21:41] <04@footwasher> Where have you been? [21:41] <04@footwasher> Where are You right now on that path with the Shepherd? [21:42] <04@footwasher> comments? [21:43] <04@footwasher> please feel free to discuss [21:43] <04@footwasher> what do those 2 verses say to you? [21:44] -ChatBot:#TownHall- [footwasher] Psalms 23:3 -- He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. [21:44] 1<mumzee>1 hey footwasher what do u see as the things that replace the rod and staff for s today would it be the BIble and prayer [21:44] 1<dachie>1 i like to think i am on the paath, sure i stray, but Jesus is always there to redirect me [21:44] 1<MerriLee>1 God allows us to go through some bad stuff to refine us [21:44] 1<smiles>1 shadow of the valley of death can be many places and circumstances.... [21:44] <04@footwasher> thats a good thought mumzee.. [21:44] 1<dachie>1 through our refining, we become purified [21:44] 1<Dorcas>1 we bring Him glory when we obey and follow His will. [21:45] <04@footwasher> amen dachie! [21:45] 1<mumzee>1 His word can sometimes feel like a rod hey [21:45] <04@footwasher> the rod protected the sheep from other things.. the staff rescued them .. [21:45] 1<MerriLee>1 yeah, but comfort in knowing the boundaries [21:45] 1<Pyro_Adidas>1 10 ya [21:45] <04@footwasher> right MerriLee [21:45] 1<dachie>1 its liek gold in the smelt pot, it is melted down, to bring the impurities out of it, then skimmed, and refined more [21:46] 1<dachie>1 finally there is pure gold [21:46] 1<dachie>1 thats how God works in us [21:46] <6@Duff>1 to me it means that through all God will provide... and no matter what...we "shall fear no evil" if we trust in Him [21:46] 1<Pyro_Adidas>1 5 good point [21:46] <04@footwasher> so true duff :) [21:46] 1<Kryptech>1 Even though the rod and staff can help us stay on track, just like sheep we often want our own way and try 2 fight against them. [21:46] 1<MerriLee>1 going thru the hard times and seeing how Jesus stays with us teaches us to trust him [21:46] <04@footwasher> yes Kryptech [21:47] <6@Duff>1 if we live true to his path... despite ridcule or persicution.... He will provide [21:47] <04@footwasher> always :) [21:47] 1<MerriLee>1 He will always provide [21:47] 1<Kryptech>1 We have 2 remember that our Shepard knows much better then we do about what's best 4 us. [21:47] 1<smiles>1 :) Kryptech...and in Bible times...sometimes if a sheep strayed enuff times, the Shepherd would break it's leg....and then carry it close to his heart... [21:47] 1<MerriLee>1 yep Kryptech [21:47] 1<mumzee>1 and eth even physical death is but a shadow when he is with us hey [21:47] 1<Kryptech>1 Interesting Smiles... [21:47] 1<dachie>1 and like the good shepherd gathering his sheep, Jesus is always at the ready for us [21:47] 1<PurePhire>1 We as sheep don't know any other way BUT our Own, so we need a shepherd to guide us [21:47] 1<mumzee>1 yep [21:47] <04@footwasher> yes dachie :) He is [21:48] 1<dachie>1 did you know sheep are the only animal that is capable of knowing its shepherds voice? [21:48] 1<smiles>1 anyone here ever seen sheep right where they live? they can be pretty dumb...:) [21:48] 1<Kryptech>1 Yes, PurePhire. It's our nature bent. [21:48] 1<Pyro_Adidas>1 5 yes very [21:48] 1<dachie>1 dogs come when anyone calls them, but sheep listen for the shepherd to call them [21:48] 1<MerriLee>1 yes they are, they will just lay down and die [21:48] <04@footwasher> what about in your own personal life.. how has He been like a shepherd to you? [21:49] 1<MerriLee>1 if they get stuck [21:49] 1<dachie>1 keeps listening for me to bellow, and then rescues me [21:49] 1<smiles>1 oooohhhh.....deliverance in hundreds of areas.......PTL! [21:49] 1<MerriLee>1 rescues me before I know I need rescuing [21:49] 1<mumzee>1 so when we are stuck somewhere we can have full confidence that when we cry to our shepherd he will hear us and rescue us [21:50] <04@footwasher> amen EmpressWhit [21:51] <04@footwasher> good discussion guys :) [21:51] <04@footwasher> does anyone have any questions?
