[21:31] <@footwasher> amen [21:35] <@footwasher> Tonight we are going to finish up our discussion on the passage of the 23rd Psalm that we have [21:35] <@footwasher> been studying, [21:36] <@footwasher> 1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. [21:36] <@footwasher> 2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. [21:36] <@footwasher> 3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake [21:36] <@footwasher> 4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art [21:36] <@footwasher> with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. [21:36] <@footwasher> 5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. [21:36] <@footwasher> 6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the [21:36] <@footwasher> house of the LORD for ever. [21:37] <@footwasher> In the past few weeks we have looked at many details of this passage [21:37] <@footwasher> We have discussed the idea of the Lord as a shepherd and us as His sheep. [21:37] <@footwasher> We saw the shepherd as loving, caring, providing for the every need of the sheep [21:37] <@footwasher> Giving food and leading them to water and to a place of rest. [21:37] <@footwasher> The shepherd protects. [21:37] <@footwasher> And the shepherd rescues. [21:38] <@footwasher> Lets look at verses 5 and 6 [21:38] <@footwasher> These verses present a shift in thought. [21:38] <@footwasher> With the words "Thou preparest a table before me in the presense of mine enemies," David describes himself at the banquet table as a guest of the Divine Host. [21:38] <@footwasher> Having his head annointed with oil symbolizes a hearty welcome, and the expression "my cup runneth over" refers to an abundant supply. [21:38] <@footwasher> His is more than the Shepherd's sheep. [21:38] <@footwasher> He is God's guest. [21:39] <@footwasher> The picture has become more realistic and nearer to human understanding. [21:39] <@footwasher> There is not fellowship and communication between the shepherd and the sheep such as is [21:39] <@footwasher> possible between host and guest, the Creator and those created in His image. [21:39] <@footwasher> The Oriental host was obliged to protect his guest. [21:39] <@footwasher> The Heavenly Host carries out the same rigid procedure of protection David describes in the shepherd psalm. [21:39] <@footwasher> Our Lord took up the same idea, and compared the Christian life to full enjoyment at a divenely set table [21:40] -ChatBot:#TownHall- [footwasher] Luke 14:15 -- And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God. [21:40] <@footwasher> And God's goodness endures beyond the grave. [21:40] <@footwasher> When the rough way is over, as children of God, we will enter into the heavenly dwelling place and receive eternal rest. [21:40] <@footwasher> Jesus called it "my Father's house" a dwelling place of joy, prepared for those who put their faith in Him. [21:40] <@footwasher> It is a comforting thought to know that "I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever" [21:40] <@footwasher> Now I want to bring to focus a different aspect of the shepherd/sheep story. [21:41] <@footwasher> We have thus far related this psalm to God's care for us. But we can further apply it to our lives in observing the qualities of the Shepherd and imitating Him. [21:41] <@footwasher> In John 21:15-17 Jesus tells Peter to feed His sheep [21:42] <@footwasher> He is asking Peter to care for the sheep of the flock in the same way that He Himself has cared for them. [21:42] <@footwasher> To walk with them. [21:42] <@footwasher> To direct them to the still waters He desires that they drink from. [21:42] <@footwasher> To show them His green pastures. [21:45] * @Bride !Kjv!: John 21:15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. [21:45] * @Bride !Kjv!: John 21:16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. [21:45] * @Bride !Kjv!: John 21:17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep. [21:46] <@footwasher> He is asking Peter to care for the sheep of the flock in the same way that He Himself has cared for them. [21:46] <@footwasher> To walk with them. [21:46] <@footwasher> To direct them to the still waters He desires that they drink from. [21:46] <@footwasher> To show them His green pastures. [21:47] <@footwasher> Lets look back at those shepherd qualities now, and apply them not just as in how God relates to us, but in our relationships with others. [21:47] <@footwasher> Do you love His sheep the way He loves them? [21:47] <@footwasher> Do you try to help them along the shepherds path rather than watching them wander astray? [21:47] <@footwasher> In what ways can we "feed His sheep" ? [21:49] <@footwasher> any comments? ideas? [21:50] <mumzee> surely meeting whatever the need is our responsibilty feeding them spiritually and physically [21:50] <@footwasher> i agree mumzee, if we are to walk in the image of Christ we are to care for the flock [21:50] <mommy3> †footwasher†: I think this Bible study was good [21:50] <mumzee> without us people are goona die and we know we have the right food i.e. Gods word that can bring them life [21:51] <twohawks> I pray every day that the Lord will put someone in my path to minister to...and He always does [21:51] <moreofHim> we need to encourage others and build them up to continue to do the work of the Lord [21:51] <@footwasher> amen twohawks [21:52] <mumzee> and i think too that when we attend often to the physical needs of the broken hearted we are able to attend toi their spiritual needs at th same time just by showing them we care , [22:03] <@Sword> Join with me in a word of prayer as we close....
